Task 2 - Hardware Technologies for Game Platforms

Introduction

In this task I am I am going to explain several hardware technologies for game platforms by doing secondary research as well as using my own understatement of the hardware.

Human Computer Interface / Interaction (HCI)

Human computer interface is any software or hardware that lets the user interact with the computer these could include mouse, keyboard, touch pad, touch screen, auditory (voice control), Joy sticks, Controllers. These devices are all configured in a way that will be the most efficient way for the user so the person and computer can almost have a better ‘communication.’ These devices are designed by knowing how users interact with them; this is done by human computer interaction.
Human Computer Interaction is when people are studied when they are interacting with a computer interface. The reason HCI happens is because it allows the computer developers to know how humans interact with a computer system for instance they might study a person using a graphic device, touch -sensitive device, voice - input device etc. Using different devices will allow a computer developer to know how well the person communicates with the devices resulting with an idea on how to make computers more 'user-friendly'. For example HCI can determine how people are using their computers so computer developers can create a more suitable computer which will be more effective and efficient.
HCI is really important because computers are becoming more advanced as the years go on, resulting in more difficult/more complicated computers. Without HCI computers developers won’t pay as much attention to the user and might create a computer which could be too difficult resulting in the user being frustrated and wasting their time. Human computer Interaction provides information which makes a huge change within the computer development, without these computers will not be as enjoyable. Here are a few examples on how HCI improves computers; Human Interaction can make computers more user-friendly by improving the user’s satisfaction, experience and making the computers more 'personal'. Although HCI can also help in other factors such as the the environmental part of the computer I.e. how noisy the computer is, How hot the computer gets, how bright the computer is. For instance if the HCI studied a group of people and they complained how bright the screen may be or how hot the computer gets then the HCI collects this vital information, making it a lot easier for computer developers to know how to improve their devices.
The main way the human computer interaction affects the interface is that it shows the way the user interacts with the devices. For instance if the input and output devices are uncomfortable for the user then the user isn't going to want to use that particular device. When the user is using a mouse for example; they want the mouse to fit in their hand, be able to click the button without stretching or move the mouse smoothly without it getting stuck. If the device isn’t suitable for the user then the user might not want to use that device which will affect the way the user is actually interacting with the game. for example if the player is playing a game with a console which is too wide then the analogue and buttons may be too far apart which could cause a struggle when using the controller. So it is really important to make a device which will be suitable for the user because it affects the relationship between the user and the computer interface.
This is important to video games because without having a computer interface the user will not be able to interact with the game.

Example

In 2016 the main consoles which were competing with each other is the play station 4 and the Xbox one. Both of these consoles use an interface devices such as controllers and sensors to help the player interact with the console.

The interface devices usually involves having buttons, analogue sticks, and triggers.
Both of these consoles have similar features in there controllers.
I am going to compare the Xbox one and the play station 4  to see what is different and what they have in common.

Unlike computers which uses interface devices such as mouse and a keyboard for the user to interact, the Xbox one and the Play station 4 both use a controller for their main device for interaction between the computer and the user.

XBOX ONE

The Xbox one offers a wide range of different buttons and triggers which the player can interact with, having more features such as buttons will help make the gaming experience more experienced and effective than it would be having just one button and one analogue although having too many buttons can be too complicated and too much.
The Xbox one controller has a design which is specially designed for players to play comfortably. For instance, as you can see in the example images you can see that the controller has two 'longer ends' at both ends of the controller, this is so the player has better grip and it fits comfortable enough in two hands. The controller is also designed so the users can easily reach the buttons and the triggers whilst holding the device so the user can use the buttons as quick as possible.

Below you can see a picture of the controller which is labelled to show the function of each individual button. The left and right stick on the controller is used so the player can interact with games and apps on the Xbox one interface, if you move the stick to the right the interface will scroll to the right although you can also press down on the stick to function as a clickable button. The A, B, X and Y Buttons are used to interact with games and the Xbox one interface for instance if you press A it means accept so if you click A on the you tube app, it will open the YouTube app up. B means back, so if you press B it will back you up to the previous interface screen. The controller has many different buttons as well as an expansion port, USB Charging port and other useful features.

PlayStation 4
The Play station 4 controller is similar to the Xbox one controller because it offers a wide range of buttons, triggers, and analogues just like the XBox one.
The PS button is used to turn on the play station 4 systems and to display the play station 4 home screen interface although if you double press the button it allows the user to switch between the application uses. The controller also has a share button and when pressed it will display a menu so the user can share clips etc. However this controller has a touch pad which allows the user to access the human interface by using a touch pad built into the controller.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The Central processing unit is also known as the CPU. The CPU is a hardware found on the motherboard. This Hardware is the most important hardware as the CPU is basically the brains of the computer, the central processing unit is the hardware with the most responsibility in away because it is the hardware which has the most instructions. Basically, anything you do on a computer is done by the CPU for instance if you click on a programme, it is then sent to the CPU as a instruction. The CPU is what makes everything possible. A CPU is full off small little chips, when the CPU is given a more difficult instruction such as creating a 3D Game then the CPU might be under too much pressure and over heat, this is why your laptop might get hot when you have been on it for several hours. The Fan helps keep the CPU cool, if the CPU got too hot then it could get 'scrambled' with instructions and begin to lag and get 'confused'. Although modern CPU's have a heat sink attached which is a thermal conductor that carries heat away from the CPU and basically spread it across the computer so all the heat isnt based in the CPU. Modern CPU's are also a lot thinner than the old CPU chips, even though the chips might be thinner there is a lot more cores. When there is more Cores the CPU will procress a lot faster, making the computer process a lot quicker.

A CPU is essential for gaming because anything to do with the computer has to go through the CPU although the graphic processor helps out the CPU quite a bit in the gaming department. For instance, if you was playing a game against real people and the graphics were really detailed it will put more of a demand on the graphic processor than the CPU. However if you was playing a game against the computer then the CPU is a essential and could cause a strain on the cpu if it isnt powerful enough. The reason this is more of a strain on the CPU is because the CPU is trying to process how to beat you on the game other than the Graphic processor focusing on it.

 Example

Some users argue what makes a CPU good and effective, some may think its how expensive it is or the amount of cores. Although it just really depends on what you expect from the CPU.  For instance some CPU'S are good for laptop and bad for a PC, some may be good at gaming and others might have better graphics. Each CPU has its own benefits and its own negatives. Here are some examples of different CPU's.

AMD A8-7670K

The first CPU is the AMD A8-7670K. This CPU has good graphics and is great for gaming as well as having a decent Multi-threaded performance it has a total of 384 shader cores, 757MHz GPU clock speed

Xeon E5-2670
The Intel Xeon E5-2670 is fast at certain tasks has a total of 16 cores, 2.6GHz Clockspeed and is really cheap.

My CPU

Here is the CPU specs which I have on my computer, As you can see I have the Intel Core I5 CPU and the speed is currently 2.40 GHZ and it has a total of 2 cores and 4 threads.

Graphic Processors

A Graphic processor is a chip just like the CPU however the CPU chip is vital to a computer so it can do simple tasks. The graphic processor is a programmable chip which is specialised for rendering images, animations and videos for the computer. The CPU can be used on a computer to process 2D images, videos or even simple tasks such as zooming in on the image and moving it.
Although a Graphic processor is usually a chip which is programmed to help with 3D tasks. For example, the Graphic processor can help smooth and render 3D animations and videos or help create lighting effects and transform 3D objects. Just like the CPU, the more sophisticated the chip is the quicker it is going to process resulting in a faster and smoother way, making 3D modelling or gaming a lot more effective/easier. The Graphic Processor does this by only having to stick to one task; this one task includes polygon calculations. Polygons are included in anything 3D for example a 3D model will have hundreds of Polygons.
The graphic processor is essential to online gaming with high graphics and real life gamers’.  This is because the graphic card is constantly loading and rendering graphics and without this the gamer will not be able to play games such as a third person shooter.

Example

For the examples of the graphic processor I am comparing the best GPU for gaming and the worst GPU which I have found during my research.

Best: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition

First, the Best GPU for gaming is the 'EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition' This GPU makes 4K gaming viable, it hasgreat performance all around and is listed number 1 in the top 10 best graphic cards in the world.

Worst: nvidia geforce 210
The worst GPU that I have came across is the  nvidia geforce 210 because it is a really cheap, low power card which means it is not good for gaming for instance you can not play skyrim or anything 'popular' like that because the game is not powerful enough although you will be able to play 'basic' games like solitaire etc. It has 16 cores and a memory clock of 500.0 MHZ and a rating of 44.

Memory (RAM)

RAM stands for Random access memory. Random access memory is a type of computer memory which can be accessed randomly the operating system, application programs and data in current use are usually stored here. It is possible to access the data in a random order which makes RAM one of the fastest storage to help find specific information and write the information.
Other devices such as a hard disk drive aren’t as fast as RAM because the hard disk drive will read the information in a certain order which takes longer than it would do if it was random access. For this reason, RAM is used as the main memory although data only remains in RAM when the computer is still turned on. This is called Volatile memory; once the computer has no power RAM will 'forget' all the data. This makes it a temporary storage meaning it only has something in its storage for so long.
Ram is important to gaming because as soon as you open the game, it will start loading on the random access memory. This is simply because RAM is much quicker than the hard drive which improves the gaming experience.

Example

In this example I am going to explain how ram is used in mobile phones and the difference between a phone with a good amount of ram and a phone which lacks on the amount. Firstly, because ram is for random access memory it means the phone doesn't  have to scan through sequentially-stored data as you might do with a CD. This makes the phone a instant - access. Ram Is alo important for phones because as well as storing all the data it also enables multi-tasking. Some mobile devices now offer real Windows-style multi-tasking, where two apps are running on-screen at once. A good amount of RAM is crucial for this.

best vs worse

The Samsung galaxy 19 Pro which has recently been released has 14 GB whilst The LG G2x which was released in 2011 only has 512MB. The difference between 14 GB and 512 MB is 13488 MB which is 13.488 GB so in estimate there is just over 13 GB MORE in the Samsung Galaxy than there is in the LG.

Display

A Computer display is also known as a computer monitor. A display is a visual display which the computer uses as an output so the user can see the images and text on screen. Computers can display their information by several devices for instance it could be a screen, projector or even have several screens as a monitor. Each different display will have a different colour capability, sharpness and size. For instance in modern computer screens they usually display colour instead of just black and white although some screens can display more colours than other screens all depending on the size of the pixel. For example a screen which has 24-bit pixels can display up to 16,777,216 colours. The most popular screen sizes for a computer display are usually 12-, 13-, 15-, and 17-inch. Having a good screen display is vital for gaming or even making games. For instance if you was playing a game on a 17 inch display screen with a 24 bit pixel then you will have a decent screen size and amazing HD Colour for your gaming, each little bit of detail for colour on your screen will be fulfilled.

Example

Anything capable of being connected to a computer and displaying its output is considered an output device some popular ways the user can see the visual display is by using a Projector, TV, Flat-Panel display and many different other displays. Although There is many, many different ways the display can form the image on the screen so the user can see the image. These different forms include Built in, External methods or liquid Crystal technology. Here are examples of each individual form;

External:

An External Display is a display which can basically be unplugged, plugged and be able to be moved individually. This display is usually connected to a computer with a HDMI lead so it can be used as a monitor. For instance a TV can be used as a external display because you are able to move the tv around individually.  Some benefits of using a External Display can be playing video games on multiple screens or having a bigger TV for a monitor.

Built-In:

Build In displays are displays which are already built into the device, making it almost impossible to change the display like you are able to do with external displays. A disadvantage of this is not being able to swap the screen for a better quality screen which can suffer in the long run. Main examples of Built in displays can include laptop displays and is really popular in hand hold consoles such as the nintendo DS and mobile phones. Main reason they do this is so the user has to buy a new console/phone instead of just buying a new screen.

Liquid Crystal:

LCD display screens vary on if you have a external or a built-in display screen. These displays are usually used in modern monitors and Flat TV screens The main difference with the LCD is how it works. The LCD screen has both liquid and solid which is dependent depending on the display's temperature. The LCD does not produce light it self because instead of creating the image it uses a light source behind the screen which will show the pixel and the light is then transferred onto the screen. The main benefit of this is that the LCD does not use as much power as the other screens and it can also display images in colour and monochrome.

Sound

Nearly everyone has got music on a digital format such as a computer or a CD and the reason this is possible is because of the sound cards which convert digital data into an analogy sound wave. Most computers already have a sound card in the mother board although the users are able to buy a separate sound card which will improve the quality of the audio. To listen to these sounds the user can also buy a separate device such as pair earphones, head set or a separate set of speakers.
Sound is used in basically any application which the user will be using, having devices will help increase the quality of the sound by making it louder making all the tiny details in the sound become more noticeable. Sound in video games might not be necessary for instance years ago video games did not have sound but sound defiantly helps connect the player to the game, making them more entertained and paying more attention to the detail in the game.

Example

Here are some examples of the different type of sound. Including the sound card, mono sound and stereo sound.

Sound Card
I have already briefly explained what the sound card but the sound card is really important because it allows the computer to create sound. This is done by the user plugging in headphones or speakers into the sound card, without this they would not be able to plug them into the device. A computer usually always include a sound card although they do not need them, this is because near enough every user wants a sound card for their computer. Although a sound card can also be bought and placed as a add on or put into the mother board. The sound card has different holes so the user can plug in different devices etc. Each 'hole' has a different colour for instance if it has a yellow hole then that hole is made for external audio source such as a CD Player. Pink is usually for the microphone and headphone. They also include other holes for MIDIS, HDMI leads etc.

Mono & Stereo

Mono and stereo sound are different listening experiences. Mono sound is when all the audio is basically mixed together and is routed through a single audio channel for instance if you was listening to mono through a pair of earphones, it will only come out of one earphone. Mono is usually used  to get high-quality experience from older recordings. However Stereo is the most common format for home audio.Stereo works by transmitting two independent signals through two separate channels into a pair of speakers. Because the audio is using two separate signals  it creates a sensation of being at a band or party because it emphasises the different instruments. Although mono signal will produce the exact same sound levels in each speaker so it does not have the same 'depth' as stereo does.

Game Storage Medium

A  Game storage medium can be used on Computers, Game consoles and mobile gaming. A game storage medium is basically any technology/device which is able to store, hold and retrieve data. Some examples of a storage medium can include; Floppy disc, Blu-Ray disc- Flash Drive, Cloud storage, Flash Memory, Universal media disc, memory sticks etc. Each Storage medium has its advantages and its own disadvantages for example a memory stick is good because it is small, portable, can resist scratches, can fit in any computer however the disadvantages are the memory stick could get lost and anyone will be able to use the memory stick if found or the memory stick could get a virus. Game Storage mediums are vital to playing some games for example if you didn’t have a play station 2 memory card then you couldn’t save the game, having this memory card is also helpful because it allowed the player to move to a different play station 2 if they wanted without losing any data of their games.

Example
There are many different storage mediums,I am going to list the most popular storage mediums, including storage mediums which are mosty used for video games.

Flash memory

Flash memory is a electronic storage medium which can be electrically erased and reprogrammed.  The Flash memory can be plugged into an external device such as a computer or laptop. Allowing the user to transfer the data.
Flash memory are usually used on a computer because a computer originally 'forgets' data so the flash memory allows the user to have a small, portable storage medium which can 'remember' the data. Although flash memory is mainly used for smaller devices such as digital cameras and MP3 players because they simply need small, special chips and the flash memory is perfect to help the camera 'remember' the information, almost acting like a hard drive.  However flash memory can start to degrade after it has been written and rewritten about 10,000 times. The reason why flash memory is a popular medium storage is because it is light, small and allows the user to have a fast access into their data.

USB Stick

A USB Stick is also known as a USB flash drive,flash-disk, pen drive  and has  other  various names. This storage devices basically includes flash memory which I have explained above. The USB may include flash memory but it has a USB interface, this makes USB removable and rewrite able just like the flash memory is. The USB is also really light weight and can easily be attached to a key chain, making it less likely to loose. The USB is also just as fast as the flash memory, the user plugs the USB into the device which then is recognise as a removable drive. Once recognised the user can transfer data, files etc.

Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)

Digital Versatile Disc is a disc which is able to store a large amount of digital data, on a standard size compact disc. The standard and most common DVD can hold up to 4.7 GB although there are different types of discs for instance the standard disc is only single sided and single layered whilst there is a DVD which has double sides, double layers and is capable of holding up to 17.08GB although this disc is much rarer than the single sided and single layered disc. A DVD is capable to hold any sort of data for instance it can hold data for movies, games and even help install data for programmes although DVD are mostly used for watching .movies and storing data for a computer. To Play a DVD on a computer, the computers needs to have a DVD drive and a software DVD player such as VLC. The DVD has up to 100 times more storage capacity than the Compact disc as well as having better graphics. When the DVD is being read, there is laser which finds the information and data on the DVD by the arrangement of the pits on the disc although we can not see the pits. Most of The DVD's which are stored in the shops are mostly DVD-ROM which means the user can not over write the data already on the disc for instance if you bought a movie from a shop it is impossible to delete the movie and re-write the data. This means that the disc is only readable. DVD is a a popular storage medium for games, the player will insert the disc into the console and the console will read and download all the data so the player can play the game. Consoles which have used a DVD as a storage medium include the play station 2, Xbox 360 and more.

Sega Card

The Sega card is a ROM card and is a medium storage, it is similar to a cartridge. The sega card was designed by sega so players can play games on the SG-1000 and the Sega master system. The reason Sega used the sega card instead of a cartridge is because it was cheaper to produce but only has a 32KB storage capacity. Sega Card was most popular in 1987 when the sega master system was first released. It was then stopped in 1989 because it wasn't as popular as sega thought it would be. They redesigned the master system and the sega card slot was removed.

Universal Media Disc

The universal Media disk is a optical disc which was introduced by sony in 2004 for their handhold game console the PSP ( Playstation portable). The PSP is the only device which uses the UMD. It has a capacity of up to 1.8 GB and could contain full-lenght movies, TV programmes and video ames on. The discs also had a case to help protect the disc. Sony thought the UMD is a ideal storage medium because it had a bigger capacity than the cartridges which means better graphics. Although players did not like the UMD because it was slow at loading the games and they are delicate for instance the case could split and damage the disc.

Playsation 2 memory card
The playstation 2 memory card is a medium storage used for the playstation 2. The memory card can hold up to 8 MB of data such as messages and saved games. To use the memory card the player can slot it in a 2 different slots on the front of the playstation just above the controller slots. The memory card allows the player to copy from one memory card to the other and decided which game data to delete. Because the memory cards are quite thick it means they are really hard to damage, they are also a reasonable size so the player can carry them around. Some disadvantages about the memory card is that there is some 'fake memory cards' which the player can buy, they are cheaper and sometimes have a better capacity than the orignal ones although using the fake memory cards can ruin the memroy card slot, making it unusable.

Nintendo Game card
The Nintendo Game card is a ROM Cartridge. Some games have been released on the cartridge holding up to 512 MB which is half a gigabyte whilst a normal CD will hold around 700MB. The cartridge is really small and thin and is similar to the game pak cartridge used for the game boy. The Nintendo game card is quite fast and has a spead off 150 nanospeed. The cartridge uses flash memory which means the games are saved permanently and can only be deleted by going into the save menu although the game paks uses a volatile memory which is more similar to the random access memory, it only contains the data when the game boy is turned on.

Interface Devices

An Interface device is a device which allows a person to interact with a computer by either inputting the data or providing the output. The most common devices are mouse, keyboards, computer speakers, webcams and headsets. Because these are the most common device for an interface device all of them are easily recognised by computers. Mouse and keyboards are input only whilst headsets and speakers are output. Although seen as laptops and computers are now becoming touch screen, using an interface device isn't going to be as necessary as it is now. It is obvious why interface devices are used for video gaming because without these devices the user will not be able to interact with the computer or any other computer service.

Examples

There are many different ways the user can interact with a computer and as the years go on the interface devices are getting more advanced. In my examples I have included a old interface device such as the joy sticks. Common interface devices such as the mouse and keypad. And more recent interface devices such as the xbox kinnect and touch screens.

Joystick

The Joystick as a device which allows the player to control the game such as controlling a plane or in a fighting game. Games which use a joystick as the main interface device are usually arcade games like street fighter and Pac Man. Usually Joysticks include extra buttons to add a bit more control to the device. Joysticks can still be used today by connecting the joystick to the computer using USB, Bluetooth, game port and serial port. The joy sticks can be moved in any direction so it can be used in many different games. The Joystick was orignally designed to give the player a bit more freedom in a game and to be used in flight simulation games.

Ball-Type Mouse and Optical Mouse

A mouse is a device where the user moves it so a digital cursor will move on the screen. So as a interface device it is important the mouse knows which direction to go and will fit comfortablly in the users hand. To do this, there is two different mouses for instance there is the optical mouse and the ball-type mouse. The ball-type mouse is the most common and traditional mouse, this mouse has a rubber ball in the center of the mouse. As the user moves the mouse, the ball will roll and push again the thin wheels, the wheels help detect if the mouse is moving up and down or side to side. The disadvantages of using a ball-type mouse is that it doesnt work on every surface, you need a solid surface such as a mouse mat. The ball-type mouse is also most likely to pick up dirt which can make the cursor stutter across the screen.

The Optical Mouse works in a different way, instead of having a ball it has a bright LED light which shines off the surface and bounces back into the light detector. This makes the mouse respond in a more precise movement.
The Mouse technology improved over the years because the mouse is really important to video games, it allowes the player to look around in the game, this is really important in shooting games because the mouse is used to aim the gun. If they only had the ball-type mouse it could cause stiffness in moving the weapons which will frustrate the players.

Keyboard

The keyboard is a really popular interface device just like the mouse. The keyboard allows users to type letters into the computer, without this the user would not be able to type any words. To type the user has to press down the key and once pressed the two layers under the key will combine together and that sends the signal to the computer. Each Key has a little switch under it, once it is pressed it completes the electrical circuit by pressing both of the layers together. The processor then figures out which keys was pressed and in what order and once done it send the information to the computer. Key boards are a main interface device because without it the user will not be able to do much on a computer or a mouse although there is a digital keyboard now. The Keyboard also allows the players to play video games for instance there are lots of different shortcuts on the keyboards as well as keys which allow the player to move in the game. The keyboard was designed so the user can be as comfortable as possible whilst using the computer, all the keys are placed in a certain order and are all close together so its easier for the user to use the keys more efficent and faster. The most common keys used for gaming on computers include W,A,S and D. These keys are all close to each other so the player can move smoothly in the game without any complications although their are keyboards which are now designed specifically for gaming and will contain extra functions.

Motion detection - XBOX kinect

Motion detection is when the device detects a change in position of its surroundings. recently some interface devices include this motion detection. I am going to use the xbox kinect as the main example for motion detection in human interface devices. The xbox kinect allows the user to interact with the console without a controller.
I personally think the smartest thing about the kinect is its intelligence to collect data of people of different backgrounds for instance knowing their age, height, gender, body type and so on. The developers did this so the kinect can learn about its surroundings. The kinect can analyze what it sees and notice whenever the user moves. The xbox kinect can also judge the distance of different points on your boyd through out the game, warning you if you are leaving the kinnects 'vision' although the kinect can move slightly to follow the player. To do this the kinect analyses its data every 30 seconds. The kinect can also detect your motion and create an image of the user on screen using  a video camera and a microphone.  The camera can detect even facial features and has a body recognition.

Touch screen

There are different types of touch screens. There is Resistive touch screens which has several layers and when the user touches the device with their finger or a stylus it comes into contact with a more flexible layer. Basically when you touch the screen the layer bends into the layer behind it. The layer behind is conductive and the layer you are touching is conductive. If you touch the first layer it is going to bend into the layer behind it, making electrical currents go to the point of contact. This means they can only handle one touch at a time and can not do multi-tasking so for instance if your Iphone has a resistive touch screen they will not be able to do the two-finger zoom. That is why they modern phones will use the  Capactive Touch screens. These touch screens are made out of materials such as copper or indium tin oxide, these materials hold some sort of electrical charge in a grid of tiny wires which are smaller than a human hair. This touch screen does not rely on the pressure of your finger to create the flow of electricity, instead it works of anything that carries a electrical charge, Including our skin.

Connectivity

Connectivity in computer is connecting devices to each other so they can transfer data back and forth. For example if a device is able to link to other devices and can import data from a wide Varity of devices then that device has good connectivity although if the computer isn’t able to connect to a network etc then they have poor connectivity. The most common way for a computer to connect to other computers is by having it connected to the internet several ways of doing this is by connecting to a broadband, Ethernet cable or hot spot. Although a computer is also able to connect to other devices such as printers, digital cameras, phones etc without using internet and just using a USB. Connectivity is just basically when multiple computers are linked up together which is usually done in an online multiplayer game. This is beneficial to video games because it allows players to connect to each other from home; this makes it easier to play multiplayer games and being more social.

Examples

It is really important that computers have some sort of connectivity, especially if the user is an online game. I am going to list some examples of what the user can use for connection.

LAN

LAN stands for local area network. LAN is basically a group of computers that share a common wireless link to a server for instance this could be in a small area such as at home, school or even a library. LAN is usually placed in a single room or building where it can span a relatively small area. LANs are also able to connect with other LANs over any distance using telephone lines and radio waves although when this happens it is known as a wide-area network (WAN). A LAN normally includes having its own CPU and its own programmers where it is able to access the data and the other devices.

LANs usually are connected to workstations or personal computers because it makes it easier for the users to share data so the other devices connected to the LAN can access that data. Using LAN also allows the users to communicate with the other users by sending emails etc. Normally computers and other devices will just use the LAN connection to share their resources like printers or storage.

To connect to LAN it normally involves cables, switches, routers and so on that will let the users connect to the internal server other popular ways to connect to LAN includes a Ethernet cable or using WIFI for instance the WIFI can use radio waves to connect the computers to the LAN. Connecting to LAN makes it easier and much faster to transmit the data across for instance the data can easier travel over the telephone line to the device although there is probably a problem with distance and obviously the more devices connected the slower the connection could be. Mostly, Large College and Universities use LAN as their main connection, this has been popular since the 60's.

Internet

The Internet is basically a global system of computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite or more commonly known as the IP address which links devices worldwide.
The internet is not owned by anyone and is a wide range of networks like private, public, academic, business and so on. The internet has an impressive amount of information and resources just by searching on the World Wide Web. The internet is effective because it allows users to connect with other devices though the internet such as E Mail or sharing files, in-fact 89.8% of the population in the UK is currently connected to the internet (as you can see below).

There are many advantages for using the internet for the main connectivity for a computer such as being able to email someone, using online shopping and online banking. But of course, there are disadvantages to come with the advantages. With Online communication it can put the user at risk of being spammed, getting malware or even be a victim of a phishing scam.
Online shopping and Online Banking are not 100% safe either, for instance there is fake websites where if you buy something and it turns out not to be a legitimate purchase resulting in the cyber-criminals to have the user’s personal details. Online banking is getting more and more popular because it allows the user to play bills online, transfer money or even just check your balance. This means that they cyber-criminals could trick you and potentially steal from your bank. Although each computer that is connected to the Internet has a unique IP Address so it is possible to track the user by using the IP address, almost like using a finger print at a crime. The internet is really important to video games as well as day-to-day life because it allows people to communication with other people without having to leave your home, this is really important to players. The internet makes it possible to have online games with people from all around the world. This makes us dependent on the internet.

BroadBand

BroadBand is a high-speed internet connection that has 'sped' up the standard way to connect to the internet. Because of this, Broadband internet service has become one of the most common form of internet access because of how fast its access speed is. To get broadband you have to pay a subscription every month for using the service and the internet service will be available 24 hours whilst you are still paying your fee. A broadband connection is almost like a telephone line, it will never be switched off and can be used any time. The Broadband can be in four different forums such as the digital subscriber line, fibre optic, cable and satellite. The old 'Dial-Up' connection is the only non-broadband internet service. Even though the dial up connection is cheaper, more and more users are going to broad band because it basically gives you access to anything you can get off the internet for instance sending emails, using google, social networks. Anything you can do on the internet, you can do on your broadband.

ADSL is when you need a modem or a router as well as microfilters. Doing this allows you to connect to your netwrok  using the internet service provider. The modem or router will plug into a socket into your phone socket as well as the micro filter which is a small plastic box. ADSL is the most popular way to connect to broadband.

The cable offers a cable internet connection and TV programmes through a Wire. The speed of cable is similar to the ADSL although it isn’t as available as the ADSL.
Satellite broadband is using a satellite dish to connect to the internet, almost the same as using the satellite for TV. Although there are two different types of satellite, you can get one way which will allow the user to be able to download only or using a two-way satellite which will offer an internet connection too. This inst a popular way because weather conditions can interrupt the service so the satellite is normally used in very isolated areas.
Fibre is the next generation of internet service, it’s a bunch of tiny wires that transmit light and because nothing is faster than light it can be up to five times faster than the fastest ADSL connections. . However, this is really difficult to do because companies will have to replace the wires in the ground across the country so they are not available yet. As you can see in the chart below, 35.8% of the population from the UK are using Broadband to connect to the internet.

WIFI

WI-FI uses radio waves to transmit information across the network and is now widely spread across homes, work, libraries, schools, airports, hotels and restaurants. It is so popular that nearly every home will have one. The reason why WI-FI is so successful is because it is basically compatible with almost every operating system, game device and advanced printer.
In fact, every modern device will be able to connect to WI-FI. This is because hotspots are becoming more popular. A hotpot is basically an area where WI-FI is available. The way Wi-Fi works is it uses radio waves to transmit information across network by using the wireless adapter. The wireless adaptor translates data sent into a radio signal. This same signal will be transmitted, via an antenna, to a decoder known as the router. Once decoded, the data will be sent to the Internet through a wired Ethernet connection.

Power Supply

A Power supply is a hardware which supplies power to an electrical device such as phones, laptops, Televisions etc. Power Supplies get their power from an electrical outlet (Plug socket) which it then collects the power and converts it from an alternating current to a direct current which is what most computers require to run fast and effective without overheating. Power supply can be from small batteries to a big power box, obviously they both contain a different voltage and power. This is why laptops, phones etc usually come with their own power supply which is called a charger, to make sure the computer is getting enough power but not too much that it could damage the computer. A power supply is necessary to any gamer because without a power supply they wouldn’t be able to turn on their console/device.

Examples

There are many different types of power supply to charge technology because there is a wide range of different devices and technology so there is going to be different batteries etc. Some power supply might need to be plugged into a socket whilst other power supplies might be built into the device itself, becoming an internal power supply. Here are some examples of technology that use internal battery and technology that needs a power sauce.

Internal battery

An internal battery is a battery which generates an electrical current without the need of an external sauce. This basically means that the battery can be charged but then once charged can be used without a power source because it is able to keep the electrical current. Most laptops and Mobile phones have an internal battery.
For example, you can charge your mobile phone over night, take it off and still have battery for the rest of the day. It is not fully dependent on the power source whilst it still has electrical currents. Some handheld devices have an internal battery such as the Nintendo DS, PSP and Game boy. Even though it is easy to tell the advantage of internal batteries for instance it gives the user more freedom, they don’t have to sit down at a power supply - they can move around. Although the disadvantages are also easily noticeable, if you leave your mobile phone charging over night it is most likely going to overcharge your phone, damaging the battery. This is a big disadvantage because some phones such as IPhones have a battery which you cannot take out and replace. Instead the user has to go and buy a new phone.
I am going to explain the difference between a removable battery and a NON removable battery to make it easier to understand the different types of internal batteries.

Removable

Advantages
Can Hard Restart. If your mobile phone is not responding, when you have a removable battery you can just quickly remove it and it will restart your phone although this could cause damage to the battery.

✔ Replaceable. If you damage your battery or it just simply dies, if you can take out the battery all you have to do is replace the battery and not the whole device. This will help save a lot of money

Disadvantages

✖ Untraceable. Removable batteries can be taken out and threw away. This can make it really hard to trace where the person who was using the battery is.

Size. Some phones with removable batters end up being a lot thicker than phones that have a non removable battery.

Non-Removable Battery

 Advantages
✔ Difficult to get inside. Having a Non-removable battery can help prevent dust or dirt getting inside the phone damaging delicate parts.

✔ Size. The size is a lot better when the phone/device has a removable battery; they are likely to be a lot slimmer. This will help benefit the appearance of the phone as well.

Disadvantage

✖ Battery issues . If your battery starts to become damaged, you cannot do much about it. With removable battery you can 'swap' the battery out. With Non removable battery, this is almost impossible. It is not easy to replace just the battery and in most cases have to buy a whole new phone.

External Source

The External Source is basically a cable which can connect into a plug for electricity it will then convert the electricity to DC from AC storing energy in to the battery. So an External source is a power source used to charge up battery for technologies such as mobile phones, laptops, Computers, handholds. Nearly every device has an External Source. This is beneficial because it allows the users to charge up their handhelds, phones with a power supply. Once charged they can then go away and use the internal batter the phone or handheld has. However, some devices which need to be plugged into the wall to play the game like Play station, Xbox and WII will need some sort of external power source to keep turned on. For example, if you pulled out the power source for the Xbox the Xbox will instantly turn off. Although it can be possible they have some sort of internal battery to keep the date and time but it can also be possible that the date and time is staying correct by connecting to the internet. In some cases, if the devices battery breaks the device can still work with just the power source. For example, I have two different laptops. In both laptops, the batteries have been damaged and no longer working although I can still go on the laptop by keeping the power source into the laptop. This can happen on any handheld or mobile but it is most likely going to happen with laptops because usually gamers who play on the laptops can play on their laptops for hours and most likely be sat in the same place, this will slowly start to over work the battery and will slowly start to fail.
I think that consoles are made to be constantly with an external power source because of this problem. For example, if an Xbox had a battery the same will happen to that battery like it did with the laptop battery. It will get over worked by gamers and eventually fail. Because consoles don’t do this and they actually do need an external power source, I think it makes it more suitable for hard-core gamers.
